THE CAUSE:
Tom O’Connor is a Sergeant in the Pennsylvania State Police. He resides in Monroeville, Pennsylvania with his wife and two young children. In early 2007, Tom was diagnosed with an aggressive form of bone cancer called chondrosarcoma. Tom underwent extensive surgery to remove a tumor from his sacrum (upper portion of the tail bone). Tragically, a complication resulting from the surgery left Tom permanently blind.
In July of 2008, Tom learned that the cancer had returned, causing a recurrance of the tumor on his sacrum. Even more disheartening, Tom's doctors found that the cancer had metastized and spread throughout his body. Tumors were located on his left femoral head (upper thigh bone), right acetabulum (hip bone), left humerus (upper arm bone), T9 vertebrae (mid-back in the spinal column) and on a right anterior rib (front of chest).
Tom’s doctors do not anticipate being able to treat all of these tumors at this time. There is a possibility that they may at least treat the tumor on his spine with intensified, localized radiation in an attempt to prevent it from growing large enough to impinge on his spinal cord (which could potentially cause loss of function and/or mobility). Tom has also requested to be enrolled in a clinical trial in which he would receive an experimental cancer treatment drug that has not yet been approved by the FDA.
Since being diagnosed last year and subsequently losing his sight, Tom has been unable to work. He has exhausted all of his paid sick leave with the State Police, and he is currently on leave without pay. Tom’s wife Jen is unable to work full time due to the level of care that Tom and their two children require. Understandably, their family is now under a heavy financial burden.
THE MISSION:
Joe Ruggery is a close personal friend and co-worker of Tom O’Connor’s. He is also an accomplished amateur bike racer. In order to raise money for the O’Connor family, Joe has committed to racing the upcoming Subaru 24-Hour Champion Challenge mountain bike race … solo.
This event will be held at the Seven Springs Mountain Resort beginning at noon on Saturday, August 30TH and continuing throughout the night until the finish at noon on Sunday, August 31ST. The course is a grueling combination of steep climbs and treacherous descents over rocky, difficult trails. Most racers compete in the team relay categories, where riders take turns completing laps on the course. Only a few racers compete solo – racing alone for 24 hours straight.
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
Please consider making a donation to support the cause! All of the money raised will go directly to Tom O’Connor and his family. You may donate at any PNC bank location by advising the teller you wish to make a donation to the "Sgt. Tom O'Connor Family Fund". Your generousity is greatly appreciated by the O'Connor family!
Also, please feel free to send a personal message to Tom and Jen O'Connor to express your support. You may reach the O'Connors via e-mail at: tjojlo@aol.com

Tom and family...Renee Wilkins is one of my dearest friends, we have known each other for 12-15 years and have both been support groups leaders for fibromyalgia...our troubles pale in comparison to what you guys are going through right now ! Renee has entrusted small bits of your story with me a time or two over the past year or so...I will continue to lift you up in prayer and ask for miraculous healing, so all may know that Jesus is LORD !
You are courageous to fight this fight and I know you fight it for your wife and children even more than you do for yourself ! I will prayer for sustained courage and strength for all of you, and for wisdom for the doctors and a mighty healing from the new treatment !
God bless you ! Take good care...
rest when you need to, stay active as you are able, eat good healthy foods to give your body every fighting chance you can give it....
I will be thinking of you !
Sincerely...oh phooey...with Love and Hugs...and a grin and giggle if you need them ! Jeannine Martin
ah...I just remembered something
....rent every stupid silly film you can think of that will make you laugh til you cry as laughter is good for the soul but also amazingly helpful in healing the body...Blazing Saddles, Grumpy old Men and the ones to follow, the ones Robin WIlliams is in...I'm sure you have your own personal favorites....laugh til your throat hurts and then laugh some more... it is amazingly cleansing....
there is so much more I want to say but I don't even know what it is ! I want to hug you guys and give you love and make it all go away !!! I have even heard of kids with cancer being taught to look at the "fight" as a video game and cancer is the "bad guy" and you are sending in your troops to fight them and vanquish this terrible enemy...whatever works for you !
Have you ever had a chance to read Lance Armstrong's life story !?! I did this past Spring and was flabbergasted by what he went through (and I only had a Reader's Digest version of the story) and it was 100% astounding to read what he survived BEFORE he ever rode in even the first Tour de France. I never even heard of him until about his 4th or 5th win then I became an avid follower and read whatever was out there to read....
please do all you can to get your people to turn in your retirement disabilty papers...no way should you be turned down for this! Ask your HR if there is hsort term disability to give you some income in the interim while waging the battle for your disability ! Once you get on Medicare you could get a nurse/nanny to care for you and the kids so your wife could work part time and bring in a little income...there are TONS of things out ther to help the blind l earn to adapt...you are eligible for a dog, you are eligible for TTY phone service, you can call the Blind Society and see what's out there for you ! They have books on tape that could entertain you when the kids are in school and your wife is away ....
Know that lots of people are praying for you guys and hold that comfort in the corner of your heart so nobody can take it away !

Hi Joe,
Our thoughts have been with you throughout the weekend. What an amazing thing you are undertaking.
Everything you have done for "The Cause" has made additional efforts possible. Your writing and website have been very important in that regard.

Hi I am a current Chondrosarcoma Patient. I have been sick for over three years but was misdiagnosed until about a year ago. I cannot afford to send any money, although I wish I could. I will promise to keep you in my prayers. Keep looking up. Keep fighting!
